I just finished writing the first part of my paper and bibliography for my paper in my English 1020 class. I chose the topic of the recent lack of police on campus at the University of Memphis. Choosing this topic was very easy because I feel passsionately about this subject and know that someting has to be done in order to change how things have been going lately on campus. Writing this paper wasn't very hard, but it was very tedious. I enjoyed exressing my feeling while writing the paper, but I didn't enjoy finding sources or using them in my paper. I assumed that finding sources that related to my topic would be easy, and I was wrong. I had a troubling time finding sources that complimented my paper. I only ended up using three sources for my paper, but I felt like they enchanced the meaning of my paper. After writing the paper, I had to do the works cited page which iis my least favorite part of any paper. It takes forever to figure the correct formatting for a paper. I had sources that didn't have any authors so it was really difficult to figure out which type of formatting was correct. After doing my works cited page, I had to do the annotated bibliography which I had never done before. I thought it was going to be way harder than it was, but it turned out to be really easy and not very time consuming which made me happy. I am pleased with my work on the paper and hope that I will make an A on it because i worked very hard on it (:

Letter from a Birmingham Jail
In class we read Dr. King's letter from Birmingham Jail and I really enjoyed the letter more than I thought I would. I had never read the letter before which is surprising for someone that is a sophomore in college. The letter takes place in Dr. King's jail cell where he is in jail for a crime that he really didn't commit. I can't imagine how frustrating it is to sit in a jail for a crime that you had no part in. This is just one of the types of racial discriminations black people had to face.
Dr. King's style of writing was very entertaining and easy to read. The tone throughout the paper was frustrated and informative at the same time. When King used examples to make his readers understand the point he was trying to make, he made sure that the his explanations were thorough. He didn't just use one example, he used many different kinds so that there was no way the reader couldn't understand what points he was trying to make. Once King devoted a whole paragraph to examples. I really found that interesting because most writers don't do that. Although I felt like the tone of the paper was serious, King also added a little of humor by saying that if he weren't sitting in a jail cell the paper probably wouldn't have been that long. This letter is a beautiful piece of writing and shows how educated of a man Dr. King was.

Topic Explanation
The topic i'm chosing for my paper is the lack of police enforcement on campus. This topic is very important to me because as a student and a young woman I feel that my safety on campus should be valued as much as my education. Last year around Christmas time there were numerous Tiger Texts being sent out to students telling us about crimes that happened on campus. It seemed like the only obvious solution to the problem would be to have more cops patrolling the school, but I have yet to see that happen. When I do see cops on campus, they are almost always patrolling in their cars, and never walking on foot or riding bikes throughout the campus. How can you possibly protect the campus if you don't even cover 75% of the campus.? At nightime you would think that their would be policemen patrolling the campus on foot, but I have yet to see one. I have heard stories from other students telling me that they've been robbed, assulted, or have felt threatened while on campus and no one was there to help them. Tuition is way too high for students to have to worry about something like feeling safe on campus. I know that this is not a problem that just concerns me, there are many other students who feel something has to be done. My topic is rhetorical in the sense that if my paper were to get in the hands of the right person, changes could be made. My topic is also rhetorical in the sense that it would effect many people and a large number of people support the change I feel should be made. I am excited to research this topic because it has been bothering me for quite some time now. I hope that my efforts won't go unoticed.
